Ice skating in Levi isn't your typical afternoon on the ice. In Finnish Lapland, you glide not on busy artificial big rinks, but on a custom made ice path right in the middle of a fairytale winter landscape. Think: snow-covered trees, crisp cold, and a silence you won't find anywhere else.

Whether you're an experienced skater or stepping onto the ice for the first time: skating in Levi is a unique way to truly experience Lapland.

What makes skating here so unique is that it’s all about nature and experience.

You don’t skate in a stadium or on an artificial rink; instead, you’re outside, breathing in the fresh Arctic air. The surroundings are constantly changing. During the day, you see the landscape in all its white glory, while in the evening it transforms into a fairytale setting with lights twinkling among the trees.

It feels less like a sport and more like exploring a winter wonderland.

One of the highlights in Levi is undoubtedly ice skating through the forest. There's a natural ice path about a kilometer long that winds through the trees.

As soon as it gets dark, the lights turn on. The light reflects off the snow, creating a warm glow in the cold landscape. While you glide over the ice, you hear little more than your own movements and the wind softly rustling through the branches.

This is when Levi truly comes to life.

In and around Levi, there are several places where you can get on the ice.

In the village itself, there's a smaller ice rink where you can easily skate for an hour. Perfect if you want to take it easy or if you're short on time.

If you want more adventure, there are tours where you can skate on frozen lakes or through forests. Often, you'll be accompanied by a guide, and everything is taken care of, from equipment to warm drinks afterward.

The most special option is the skating path in the forest. It’s truly an experience in itself and something you won’t find easily anywhere else.

Ice skating is accessible for everyone. For those who are still a bit wobbly on their skates, skating aids (frames) are available. You can also use a traditional kicksledge. This way, the whole family can enjoy the journey through the woods together.

In between, you can catch your breath in the warm changing room or enjoy the serene surroundings. After skating, you'll warm up in a traditional kota with a hot drink.

Good preparation makes all the difference.

Dress in layers, as the temperature can drop significantly. Gloves and a buff are definitely not a luxury, especially if you're moving faster and the wind feels colder. Bringing dry socks is always a good idea too.

When you're on the ice, it's smart to start off slowly. Look ahead instead of at your feet and take turns gently. Especially on natural ice rinks, you want to keep a good eye on your surroundings.

Try to go in the afternoon or evening as well. It adds that extra touch of atmosphere.
