The home of Rudolph

Reindeer have been grazing the vast meadows of Lapland for centuries. In the summer they roam freely in the woods and over the fields. Once the snow has covered all their food with a thick layer, they return to their farm where they are fed and cared for.

In the winter, except when they fly around the world on December 24th, they take up their original task again: transporting people through the snow. At the reindeer farm, we learn that a reindeer can carry three times its own weight, has special hooves to dig through the ice for food and loses its antlers in winter (because they only need them to impress during the mating period in summer).

After a 4-kilometre ride we are rewarded with some food, we get to see the rest of the herd and are told (over a cup of warm berry juice, what else?) all about these beautiful animals.

The equipment

The visit to the farm is quiet and can be done with your normal thermal clothes on, but the reindeer also take us on the sled, which can cut sharp winds along your face. On site you will get a blanket to hide under, but you'd better bring your thick scarf, hat, mittens and possibly even balaclava.

Did you know?

Santa's loyal animals have special hoofs that makes it possible to dig deep through the ice. This way, it's still possible for them to eat after the first snow has fallen.
